Summary

Elvis Cole's first appearance in The Monkey's Raincoat garnered Robert Crais the prestigious Anthony and Macavity awards as well as nominations for Edgar and Shamus honors。 With the next two electrifying entries in this bestselling series, Stalking the Angel and Lullaby Town, the legion of Elvis fans expanded among readers and critics alike。 Now in Free Fall Elvis gets caught up in his hottest case yet, a case that tests the limits of the human heart as Elvis uncovers a world of cops gone wrong in L。A。's most explosive neighborhood。 Jennifer Sheridan has a good job, a great future, and an engagement ring from the man she loves, a member of an elite LAPD plainclothes unit operating in the war zone known as South Central Los Angeles。 But her great future is suddenly in jeopardy - and it's her cop fiance who's the problem。 Jennifer is certain that Mark Thurman is in some kind of trouble, and she wants Elvis Cole to find out what it is。 Elvis never could say no to a woman in love, so he takes on the case only to find that some jobs are easier than others: Before Elvis even has a chance to leave his office, Thurman himself drops by to discourage Elvis from proceeding with the investigation。 Jennifer's suspicion that he's in trouble is off track, he says; there's no trouble, there's just another woman - it may not be pretty, but it's not criminal, either。 Elvis's investigation seems to bear out Thurman's claim。 Then he discovers the very thorough, nearly undetectable search someone has made of his office。 Someone with a lot of practice at careful inspections。 Someone like a cop。 Suddenly the case turns deadly as Elvis and his enigmatic partner Joe Pike plummet into a world of racist cops,South Central street gangs, and conspiracies of silence。 But Jennifer Sheridan won't give up on her man so easily, and the case kicks over into white-hot overdrive as Elvis and Joe find themselves framed for a crime they didn't commit, and L。A。's deadliest street gang targets Mark a

Elvis Cole takes the case of a young woman who suspects that her police detective boyfriend is in trouble。 That turns out to be an understatement, so Elvis and his partner, Joe Pike, have their hands full with gangsters, cops, and violence。 A conventional, fast read。

Suspense and twistsAs all Robert Crisis novels , Free Fall has plenty of action and suspense with a little light heart twist here and there。 Thoroughly enjoyable with twists at the end I didn't see coming。 Suspense and twistsAs all Robert Crisis novels , Free Fall has plenty of action and suspense with a little light heart twist here and there。 Thoroughly enjoyable with twists at the end I didn't see coming。 。。。more

Great light beach read。 Fast paced page turner with some good sense of humor by Cole (lead character)。 I would love to hang out with the guy sometime。 The detailed description of his work place and home makes him seem almost real。 I guess I am visual reader so I get completely engrossed when such details are present。The story itself moved at a good pace about the crime。 I didn’t like the female character though as she was portrayed as helpless damsel who is all about the guy。 Overall, I like Rob Great light beach read。 Fast paced page turner with some good sense of humor by Cole (lead character)。 I would love to hang out with the guy sometime。 The detailed description of his work place and home makes him seem almost real。 I guess I am visual reader so I get completely engrossed when such details are present。The story itself moved at a good pace about the crime。 I didn’t like the female character though as she was portrayed as helpless damsel who is all about the guy。 Overall, I like Robert Crais。。keeps it light and fast paced。 If one likes James Patterson, give Crais a try too。 。。。more

It figuresIf you write about crime in LA, the lure to do a Rodney King plot is too great to reject。 This one lacked the fun of others。

I didn't enjoy this quite as much as the other Elvis Cole books I've read。Don't get me wrong, it's still a really good book, and there's as much action as you could hope for。 I think what is not quite at 100% for me is Elvis himself。 I just found him to be a bit less engaging, even his characteristic wit and humour seem a little forced。 It's almost as if Crais wasn't quite "feeling it" when he wrote this one。 Pike, however is everything we expect from the understated but deadly sidekick。Don't le I didn't enjoy this quite as much as the other Elvis Cole books I've read。Don't get me wrong, it's still a really good book, and there's as much action as you could hope for。 I think what is not quite at 100% for me is Elvis himself。 I just found him to be a bit less engaging, even his characteristic wit and humour seem a little forced。 It's almost as if Crais wasn't quite "feeling it" when he wrote this one。 Pike, however is everything we expect from the understated but deadly sidekick。Don't let me put you off, maybe it's not the book at all, maybe it's me。 And it is still a solid 4 stars from me。 Just not quite the 5 I anticipated。 On to the next one。 。。。more

The Elvis Cole/Joe Pike series of books is one of my favorite detective/crime thriller series out there。 Recently I’ve been reading the earlier books and “Free Fall” is the 4th in the series and I think Robert Crais has really nailed the tone of these characters。 I really love the relationship between Cole and Pike, they seem to read each other’s minds and work perfectly as a team。 I love the humor and dialogue-Cole is quite the smart ass! This is a decent mystery/private detective story and made for an entertaining read。 The underlying story was good and it was a fast-paced story。 I am not a huge fan of the “noir” style of writing that Crais uses。 This “noir” style hinders character development as the protagonist is constantly making silly cracks and comments。 The story is about a young woman hiring Cole to investigate her boyfriend as she thinks he’s in trouble。 The story then develops into one of crooked cops in Los Angeles who This is a decent mystery/private detective story and made for an entertaining read。 The underlying story was good and it was a fast-paced story。 I am not a huge fan of the “noir” style of writing that Crais uses。 This “noir” style hinders character development as the protagonist is constantly making silly cracks and comments。 The story is about a young woman hiring Cole to investigate her boyfriend as she thinks he’s in trouble。 The story then develops into one of crooked cops in Los Angeles who work with a ruthless gang leader, and Cole and Pike are caught up n the middle of the danger。 All in all, I would say it’s an entertaining read but not anything that really grabbed me。 。。。more

I always like a good Elvis Cole story! This one, Free Fall, was one I had overlooked, so I was glad to have the chance to read it。 It didn’t disappoint me。 If you like private detective books, you will enjoy this book。 Try it!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。

Not sure if I'm reading the Cole/Pike series in the correct chronological order, but once you know the characters it doesn't really matter。 You'll notice, of course, that in the earliest volumes the detectives don't carry cell phones, because they weren't out there yet。 But Cole's '66 'Vette is timeless and continues to feature in each of his books。 Crais is witty, evidenced mostly in Cole's lines。 He's also deep, and detail-oriented in his plots-- that is, they hang together, without inconsiste Not sure if I'm reading the Cole/Pike series in the correct chronological order, but once you know the characters it doesn't really matter。 You'll notice, of course, that in the earliest volumes the detectives don't carry cell phones, because they weren't out there yet。 But Cole's '66 'Vette is timeless and continues to feature in each of his books。 Crais is witty, evidenced mostly in Cole's lines。 He's also deep, and detail-oriented in his plots-- that is, they hang together, without inconsistencies nor required suspensions of disbelief。 I like whodunits that are only slightly more complicated than I could devise or follow on my own, and that's what I find in Crais' books。 。。。more

In this book Elvis Cole and Joe Pike investigate alleged police corruption。 I was struck by how our society is still grappling with some of the same policing issues explored in this novel from the early 90s。 I really like the Elvis Cole character, but Joe Pike isn’t being developed very much。 Maybe that will change in future novels。 I highly recommend this book!

When I first started this book, it put me to sleep over and over again。 The first half was very boring and at times, felt awkward。 Then, Bam! Almost nonstop action and at that point, kept me glued to it。 I would recommend this to fans of the series, just with a disclaimer to stick with it and they will be rewarded。

Another immensely enjoyable Elvis Cole/Joe Pike novel。 This time, our detectives are after a corrupt elite police unit that has somehow joined forced with the South Central L。A。 gang, the Cripp-affiliated Eight-Deuce Gangster Boys。 I don't know how Robert Crais can at one and the same time keep things light and deal with such serious and timely issues as a police conspiracy。 Free Fall is the fourth novel in the series and -- so far -- I have read them in order and loved all of them。 Another immensely enjoyable Elvis Cole/Joe Pike novel。 This time, our detectives are after a corrupt elite police unit that has somehow joined forced with the South Central L。A。 gang, the Cripp-affiliated Eight-Deuce Gangster Boys。 I don't know how Robert Crais can at one and the same time keep things light and deal with such serious and timely issues as a police conspiracy。 Free Fall is the fourth novel in the series and -- so far -- I have read them in order and loved all of them。 。。。more

Elvis and Joe help a young woman find out about the her troubled fiance police officer。 The trouble is horrible and sordid involving his entire squad of five。 Police brutality, drugs, and racism are just the top of an ugly iceberg。 Elvis and Joe get into the thick of it and you meet some memorable characters, who remind the reader of lessons in honor and loyalty。 Excellent read!

Always InterestingRobert Crais knows how to tell a story。 His writing is some of the best there is。 I'm happy to read anything that has his name on it。 Elvis Cole and Joe Pike are a team that can take care of any problems they choose to take on。 It's not the money but the sense of justice that's important。 Always InterestingRobert Crais knows how to tell a story。 His writing is some of the best there is。 I'm happy to read anything that has his name on it。 Elvis Cole and Joe Pike are a team that can take care of any problems they choose to take on。 It's not the money but the sense of justice that's important。 。。。more

I like Elvis and Pike。 The story moved fast and leaves you wanting more。 The language does get rough especially with the F word。 I would not recommend it to anyone below high school level。 If you like John MacDonald Travis McGee series you will like this series。

This easy to read, fast, fun series by Robert Crais is a go to when I want to read something I know I will enjoy。 Elvis Cole is a private eye in Los Angeles。 He is funny; many of his silly comments are things he thinks rather than shares, but he does share a lot of wise cracks, too。 He practices yoga and martial arts。 His friend and partner Joe Pike is a scary man of few words, but uncommon skills。 In this episode a young woman named Jennifer comes to Elvis to ask him to help her LAPD boyfriend。 This easy to read, fast, fun series by Robert Crais is a go to when I want to read something I know I will enjoy。 Elvis Cole is a private eye in Los Angeles。 He is funny; many of his silly comments are things he thinks rather than shares, but he does share a lot of wise cracks, too。 He practices yoga and martial arts。 His friend and partner Joe Pike is a scary man of few words, but uncommon skills。 In this episode a young woman named Jennifer comes to Elvis to ask him to help her LAPD boyfriend。 All she knows is that he is in trouble, but she doesn’t know what it is。 Easy peasy for Elvis to find out that Mark is seeing another woman。 But no, that isn’t it insists Jennifer。 Mark is a detective with the elite REACT team out of South Central LA。 Elvis is a sucker for a agreeing to keep digging just for Jennifer。 He and Joe end up uncovering massive corruption within the REACT team。 It involves gangs, drugs, and a covered up murder。 The danger ramps up quickly and violently。 Elvis puts himself smack in the middle of it all with dirty cops and particularly dangerous gang leader gunning for him。 I enjoyed this very much。 。。。more

Elvis Cole is definitely an entertaining character to read, with more than his fair share of humor and wit。 But that's pretty much it。Michael Connelly was able to capture the gritty side of Los Angeles in vivid details, giving a clear picture of Los Angeles, but at this stage, Robert Crais lacks that。 His writing has improved from the first book, which I felt was a little hard to get into, but this book is still too much over the top, continuing the trend of Elvis and Joe barging head on and get Elvis Cole is definitely an entertaining character to read, with more than his fair share of humor and wit。 But that's pretty much it。Michael Connelly was able to capture the gritty side of Los Angeles in vivid details, giving a clear picture of Los Angeles, but at this stage, Robert Crais lacks that。 His writing has improved from the first book, which I felt was a little hard to get into, but this book is still too much over the top, continuing the trend of Elvis and Joe barging head on and getting into gang fights with some notorious gangs。 With his seemingly abundance of sentimental wit, Elvis Cole is a great character to read about, but still lacks the connection you look for in a series, making each book more of a standalone rather than part of a bigger picture。 With less exaggerated bravado and flair, the series has a promising future。 。。。more
